transvestism
The process of cross-dressing or wearing clothes appropriate to the opposite sex. Usually applied in the case of men who dress temporarily as women- and not to be confused with either transsexuality or homosexuality . Cross-dressing assumes many forms across different cultures. It was diagnosed as a condition in the West in the late nineteenth century. Transvestism is an important topic in the study of gender presentation, for it often involves men passing (masquerading) as women, and is more generally a significant factor in the sociology of dress (see, for example,, Transvestites and Transsexuals, 1975).
